Abstract Expressionism 1 is the first half of Tony Tyson’s second album after last year’s debut album Fruitless Loops. Inspiration for the album was taken from modern art paintings; all tracks are named after the paintings that inspired them. Opener Tragic Space is dominated by a hectic kick drum rhythm and emotionally charged synths. No Way Out is a fast paced acidic work out, haunted by eerie vocal elements and squeaky synths. Jerusalem provides more acid action, albeit in a sparser fashion, with additional melodic elements creating a surreal atmosphere. Closing out the first half of the album is the dramatic Guernica, inspired by one of Pablo Picasso’s seminal works.
